How marvelous to sometimes
Be

About

Career path

Violaine Buet is qualified in Humanities ; the Science of Education and Sign Language. On obtaining a diploma in industrial design at ENSCI (Paris), she spent 7 years in South India. As her passion for textile design developed, she studied the block print technique and enjoyed a two-year collaboration in a traditional, local workshop where innovatively she alternated between the hierarchical roles of apprentice and director. Her close-knit relationship with artisans has confirmed her certitude that the beauty of each design or material is intrinsically tied to the harmony between each link, which unites every hand involved in the creative process. On her return to Brittany, her birthplace, Violaine spent one year at ENSAD (Paris) doing a continual assessment course on textiles and materials, where she began her intensive research on seaweed. In September 2016 she set up her studio for the research and creative development of macro-algae and is accompanied by a network of experts, researchers and artisans with whom she collaborates according to the precise requirements of each individual project.

Objectives

To develop an innovative expertise to ennoble the ancient algae from its natural state to novel utilizations from the fine and living arts, haute couture, scenography and decoration to visual merchandising and industry.
To lead the research on other materials with multidisciplinary teams, using the path of this groundbreaking and innovative approach.

“Algae hold a piece of eternity for me. My ally -brown seaweed- is 1,3 billion years old and carries the force to have accompanied the origins of life. I bow before the majesty of this material, never positioning as its conqueror but remaining deeply aware of the wisdom of nature. Seaweed is multifaceted… Is this due to a survival instinct confronted by mankind’s potential threat ? It is more like a stupendous capacity to adapt to a perpetually changing environment. Algae inspire my utmost respect and I treat them with gentleness, winning them over slowly. Unveiling their mysteries has taught me patience. I enjoy traveling on unknown territories and I feel profoundly alive imagining and savoring the joys of future discoveries”
